Alberta Health Services provides Emergency Medical Services (EMS) through a combination of AHS staff, contracts with municipalities and contracts with private providers. Services provided include:

Receives requests for service from municipal 911 centres and dispatching the closest most appropriate staff. Responds to requests for service with trained staff including Paramedics, Emergency Medical Technicians and Emergency Medical Responders

Provides care and treatment to the sick and injured in the community guided by medically approved protocols

Transports to the appropriate medical facility

Receives requests to move patients within the health care system between health care facilities. Coordinates and completes the transfer of patients between health care facilities using ground and air ambulance resources

Participates in other health care activities in the community including care in health facilities, prevention and education, and community and home care.

Because lives are potentially on the line whenever Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are called upon, ensuring we’re providing every patient with the right care, at the right time, by the right provider remains a vital, ongoing goal for Alberta Health Services (AHS).

As an integral part of health and an important component of the public safety net, the provincial model of EMS includes:

Ground Ambulance
Air Ambulance
Inter-Facility Hospital Transfers
EMS Dispatch
