POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking highly skilled and dedicated Advanced Care Paramedics or Registered Nurses to join our sedation team, working across various dental clinics. As a Sedation Assistant, you will play a crucial role in providing safe and effective IV sedation to patients in a non-hospital setting. Your expertise in patient care and emergency response will ensure the highest standards of safety and comfort for our patients.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Pre-operative Assessment & History Gathering:
- Conduct thorough pre-operative assessments, including medical history reviews and physical evaluations.
- Identify any potential risks or contraindications for IV sedation and communicate findings with the dental team.
- IV Initiation & Maintenance:
- Prepare and administer intravenous (IV) sedation under the supervision of a licensed dentist or anesthesiologist.
- Monitor and maintain IV lines, ensuring proper flow rates and patient safety
- Vital Signs Monitoring & Documentation:
- Continuously monitor patients’ vital signs throughout the sedation appointment, including heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation.
- Document and report any changes in patients’ conditions to the sedation team promptly.
- Emergency Response:
- Act as a first responder in the event of a medical emergency, providing immediate care and support.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including dentists, dental assistants, hygienists and other healthcare professionals, to ensure a coordinated and effective response.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Certification as an Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) or Registered Nurse (RN) with current registration.
- Extensive experience in IV initiation, maintenance, and patient monitoring.
- Strong knowledge of emergency medical protocols and procedures.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Flexibility to work in multiple locations and adapt to varying schedules.
PREFERRED SKILLS
- Previous experience in a dental or sedation setting.
- ACLS certification
- University of Alberta Sedation Assistant course
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
