Full Time PCP/EMR

Provide BLS Ambulance coverage to the East Central Ambulance Association service area. County of Paintearth, Castor, Coronation, Veteran, Consort and parts of Special Areas.

Coverage is provided from our 3 Stations Castor, Coronation and Consort.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS

 

  1. After completion of the East Central Ambulance Association (ECAA) mandatory orientation and assigned training trips, all staff must be able to act as a driver or attendant, and as much as possible, depending on level of training and experience, staff shall share duties of driving and attending.

 

  1. Staff members are expected to be available for their scheduled shifts. If the staff member is unable to cover any of the shifts on the established schedule, they shall contact the Operations Manager for assistance.

 

  1. No Ambulance shall respond to a call without the proper staff. At the minimum 1 EMR and 1 PCP shall respond.  Ideally 2 PCP trained staff members will respond to any call for assistance.

 

  1. All shift exchanges must be documented on the ECAA Shift Exchange Record Form and submit to the Administrative Office, see Appendix I to this policy for approval.

 

  1. The responsibilities of the driver and the attendant shall be jointly shared and the responsibilities outlined below are guidelines.

 

Responsibilities of Driver

  • safe operation of vehicle
  • general ambulance cleaning, which includes stretcher and vehicle interior, both driver and patient compartments upon completion of trip
  • exterior cleaning as needed
  • routine ambulance inspections, refuelling and record keeping for same
  • stretcher and equipment handling as directed by attendant

  • communications with hospital and the 911 dispatch centre
  • assist attendant with patient care while on scene
  • assist any family member transported with patient after the patient’s needs are managed
  • any and all other duties as directed by the Operations Manager.

 

 

Responsibilities of Attendant:

 

  • Direct patient care unless accompanied by a Hospital or Health Centre staff member.
  • Proper completion of the PCR.
  • Inventory and proper replacement of items used on trips.
  • Identify and treat all patients according to Alberta Health Services protocols.
  • Identify the need for further resources.
  • Communicate the number of patients and nature of injuries to other East Central Ambulance Association crews responding.
  • Communication of patient report to Hospital or Health Centre by radio and or phone prior to arrival.
  • Ensure battery operated equipment is recharged and ready for next use.
  • Assist the driver with stretcher, and exterior cleaning when documentation complete.
  • Assist Hospital or Health Centre staff as requested.
  • Ensure the patient’s personal belongings accompany the patient during an inter facility transfer.
  • Any and all other duties as directed by the Operations Manager.

 

Joint Responsibilities:

 

  Regardless of who is on scene prior to the first responding Ambulance crew, or their level of        training, all patients will be identified and assessed by an East Central Ambulance Association     staff member so as to properly care for all patients and to assess the need for further resources     such as other Ambulances, Fire or Police.

 

Communication is most important whether between the crew members on scene, backup crew,  Fire or Police.

 

The preferred method of communication is via the radio.  In situations where radio                       communication is not possible, the use of cell phones is acceptable, but communication should    be done through Dispatch so that information can be relayed as required.

 

A breech of these responsibilities may result in disciplinary action.
